White Temple? or Black Temple? Or much better the Golden Toilet? Well, why not see all of them? Both of the Temples are just about near to each other while the Golden Toilet is just located on the left side towards the exit of the White Temple. Both Stunning and not to be miss when visiting Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai or if you’re somewhere near around that part of Thailand. While the White Temple is a Buddhist and Religious location, Black Temple is not a Temple but it’s real name is Baan Dam Museum or Black House. READ MORE BELOW…

WHITE TEMPLE or WAT RONG KHUN
White Temple is my number one on the list to visit in Chiang Rai, Thailand. I mean you can’t say no to those Instagram photos and videos we see everytime we scroll Hashtag #WhiteTemple, Hashtag #Chiangrai, it just look majestic isn’t it? And it is! in real life. Although, I have to warn you that those instagram photos you see is just What you can really see in the White Temple Location. You’ll see what I mean if you WATCH my VIDEO below. So here’s the process of going in the White Temple, you buy your ticket and then they will give you two plastic bags to put your shoes in If you choose to enter the small temple in the middle of the White Temple.
So you walk to that bridge, where everyone has their own version of photos on instagram, you take a photo then you walk straight pass the two big statues, you have an option to pass through the buddha inside where you take off your shoes and put it inside the plastic bags. I promise it is just a very quick walk to go in there and pass through and you are NOT allowed to take photos or videos inside. Your next option after you pass the bridge with two statues is to walk right or left side of that buddha temple and go out of that place, To exit, you go down the stairs and try to find the Golden Temple next, which is technically a Toilet or restroom that looks marvellous! I mean where can you find a full gold toilet hehe I guess only in Chiang Rai White Temple.
About the White Temple and the Golden Toilet:
White Temple also known as Wat Rong Khun. It is owned by Chalermchai Kositpipat, who designed, constructed, and opened it to visitors in 1997. The white building represents the idea to make merit and to focus on the mind, instead of material things and possession.The golden building represents the body, whereas the white ubosot represents the mind. The gold symbolizes how people focus on worldly desires and money.
BLACK TEMPLE or BLACK HOUSE – BAAN DAM MUSEUM:
Baan dam museum, Black House or also known as Black Temple is located just near to the White Temple. As what the name says, The place is just all black houses and some little bits of white and some bits of red. The structures is just unbelievable. In Thai, “baan” means “home” or “house” and “dam” means “black”, hence the name.
You’ll be lucky if you happen to stumble upon the Artist and the owner of the property, His name is Thawan Duchanee because he still lives there in one of the building inside the property. Inside, you’ll see paintings, sculptures, animal bones, skins, horns, silver, gold and a lot of some other unique items.
It took us 3hours to drive up From our hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand to Chiang Rai. Take note that it is really a long drive and it can be so boring so be prepared for it or have a little nap which is a good idea. There were a long road construction going on that day. It was a little more slower going up the mountains than we expected because of that. Also the rain was pouring it was hard to see the road and to be safe our driver was taking it slower as well. It was a very tiring drive going up to Chiang Rai and down back to our Hotel.
We drove and stayed way longer in the car compare to going and visiting the white temple and the black temple. I only took us around 30minutes to go around each temples. There wasn’t any queue to buy tickets on both temples, everything was so smooth and good. Just waited for some quick opportunity to take photos without people in it. Also there are food stalls just outside the locations incase you get hungry. To be safe, wear modest or covered clothing.

Remember that The White Temple and The Black Temple is not in Chiang Mai, it is located in Chiang Rai another province of Thailand. Both Temples are also famous for being the Heaven and Hell in Thailand which sounds very interesting. Also there are some other amazing temples around like the Blue Temple where we didn’t have time to go to, and lots of temples you can see while driving up Chiang Rai.
My suggestion is to drive up there very early in the morning so there’s no traffic, Better not to eat anything if you get car sick as it is a long and winding road or bring some snacks in the car to munch on. Better if You can reach both of the temples right when it opens the gate then You can finish both before their lunch time break then you can also have some lunch and then after that, you can go on and visit the other beautiful temples around.
