Dubai is a beautiful country, packed with all kinds of activities. If you go there with a proper itinerary, chances are you will never be bored. However, considering that it is a muslin country, you will definitely ask yourself this question: what am I going to wear there?
Men have it easy since they don’t have to bother with skirts and tank tops. Living in other countries, women are used to wearing miniskirts and revealing tops – but if you show up in the Dubai Mall with a mini skirt, you might not get the appreciative glances that you are expecting.
Depending on the circumstances, you may want to carefully choose your clothing – and be respectful of the locals. You are, after all, a visitor in their culture. From the minute you step out of your Dubai airport taxi, here’s what you ought to keep in mind.
General Clothing Advice
Dubai may be a Muslim country – and burqas are indeed a thing there. You will see them more often than not. At the same time, however, Dubai is fairly open-minded – and you will not be requested to wear a burqa as well.
The public there is fairly international, which is why you may see anything from sleeveless shirts to shorts. No one will lose their minds if you wear a skirt that stops right above your knees – particularly if you stick to the tourist spots.
You do, however, need to be careful of the timeframe. For example, if you are visiting during Ramadan, you might want to dress in a conservative manner. That is a time of fasting, even eating in public is considered to be disrespectful.
Dress Codes to Consider
As mentioned, depending on the time of your visit, you may want to consider a particular dress code. For example, if you go to the beach, no one will bat an eye if you go there wearing a bikini. As long as you don’t show up nude there to get the perfect tan, everything should be alright.
However, if you want to grab a snack at the nearby restaurant, you should ditch the beachwear for proper clothing. For these environments, men are required to wear long pants and closed shoes. Women have it easier here; they are allowed to wear sandals.
Generally, if you walk around mosques and public markets, no one will say anything if you wear shorts and a tank top. However, you will get a lot of stares – so to feel more at ease, you might want to dress in a more conservative manner. Covering your arms, legs, and even head might be the appropriate choice – particularly if you go to the countryside.
If you are planning to go to the desert, particularly with a tourist tour, no one will say anything if you wear shorts and tank tops. However, you may want to go for breathable clothes that cover your skin – not for the people, but because the scorching sun will ruin your skin. Also, don’t forget the sunscreen.
If you go to this part of the globe, make sure that you arrange for airport transfers Dubai. They are generally familiar with tourist clothing – and won’t usually mind if you show up in a sundress.
