Packing for a Cruise: Practical, Nautical Style

As far as chores go, you could do far worse than packing for a cruise holiday. In fact, planning what you’re going to wear on the ship is the perfect way to get excited about your forthcoming departure. Before you set sail, here are a few tips on what to pack for your nautical adventure:

Consider Your Destinations

Cruises these days don’t just circle the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. Whilst these are still popular destinations, cruise companies continue to add new itineraries every year. With companies like PO cruises going everywhere from Australia to Iceland, it’s worth letting your destination(s) guide your packing decisions. If you’re exploring the freezing fjords of Norway, a winter jacket is an absolute must. However, it you’re travelling around the Indian Ocean in June, packing plenty of cool sundresses makes the most sense.

Don’t Be Afraid to Go Glam

Cruises embody the old fashioned glamour of travel. A far cry from budget airlines and generic hotels, cruises have retained an elegance that is no longer associated with the typical ‘land’ holiday. With this in mind, don’t shy away from packing your finest. Sequined shawls, floor-length gowns, 4-inch stilettos – don’t worry, there’s an occasion for all of it. Most modern cruise ships have at least one swanky restaurant where you’ll want to dress to impress.

Prepare to Be Active

One way in which cruises have changed since the early days is the ever-increasing array of activities on board. From swimming pools and bowling alleys to ropes courses and zip-lines, there’s plenty to keep you moving while floating across the open seas. So, make sure to pack plenty of active wear, including a few swimsuits, exercise shorts, workout tops and running shoes.

Of course, one of the best pieces of packing advice is to avoid over-packing. Most cruise ships have laundry facilities on board, so resist the urge to bring the kitchen sink!
