Believe it or not, you don’t need heaps of time to get acquainted with the proverbial city above the sea – Shanghai. In fact, much of what there is to see and do can be easily be done in just three days.

Here are some tips for a three-day itinerary to ensure you get the most out of your tailor made China tours and holidays when visiting Shanghai.

Day One in Shanghai
One of the defining features of Shanghai is the Huangpu River which divides the city into two parts: Pudong on the east and Puxi on the west. Aim to spend your first evening in the Lujiazui area, enjoying the view of the city from the many skyscrapers, such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower or the observation deck of the Shanghai World Financial Centre. Or, just spend time wandering from one building to the next.

Day Two in Shanghai
Spend day two pursuing the city’s history. Much of what you will do is on the west side of the river, located in Puxi. Try to wake up before dawn and walk or take a taxi over to the historical Bund, which is a long row of buildings from the 1920s that sits along the Huangpu River, just across from those skyscrapers you visited the night before. If it’s a clear enough day, stick around to watch one of the most beautiful sunrises in the world.
You should then walk down East Nanjing Road towards the subway station and ride Line 1- to Yuyuan Gardens. Here, you will find a variety of delectable traditional foods for breakfast and lunch and one of the most comprehensive collections of traditional architecture in Shanghai.

Afterwards, use the metro system to get to West Nanjing Road where you will come across the Jing’an Temple. The Temple is a reconstructed third-century structure of immense beauty. After your visit, spend the afternoon exploring the French Concession neighbourhoods or ride the to People’s Square to wander around Shanghai Museum.
You could then end the day by walking down East Nanjing Road once more for a stunning sunset and loads of bustling bars.

Day Three in Shanghai
A great way to spend your last day in Shanghai is actually outside of the city. The Anji Bamboo Forest is simply splendid. You can get there via a combination of taxi and bus, depending on where you are staying. You could also visit the historical cities of Suzhou and Hangzhou and the ancient water town called Zhujiajiao. It’s also worth paying a visit to the Chongming Island nature reserve.

Conclusion
Three days in the city of Shanghai may not sound like very much, but it really is enough to walk the history-rich streets, marvel at skyscrapers and appreciate the flourishes of nature. You don’t have to follow this itinerary to the tee, but it is a good starting point for making the most of your short time in such a marvellous city.
