How to Choose the Colour of your Prom Dress

The prom is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that every girl relishes, and it is a chance to put forward your very best look, while spending a unique night will all your best friends. The prom is a social event when you simply can’t afford to take any chances. With that in mind, here are a few tips and suggestions about selecting the best colour for your prom dress.

How to Choose the Colour of your Prom Dress

✓ Knowing your Skin Tone – This is the first step towards deciding on the colour of your prom dress, and skin tone has two aspects; firstly, the colour of your skin, and also your skin’s undertone, which is the colour under your skin. Examples of skin colour are ivory, pale, light, medium or dark, and you ideally want a dress colour that contrasts well with your skin tone. Of course, plain black prom dresses are always a safe bet. By searching online for a boutique designer dress retailer, you can browse a wide selection of designer gowns, all at affordable prices too.

✓ Dark Skin Tone – If you have dark skin, then bold colours will complement your skin tone, with colours like turquoise and emerald green, and even white. Avoid dark shades, especially black, as this will not be complementary at all, while any bright colour will contrast well with your skin colour. There is also a great article that explores the best dress colours that match your underlying skin tone, which might provide the inspiration you need to choose the perfect shade.

How to Choose the Colour of your Prom Dress

✓ Pastels for Light Skin Colour – Pastel colours are idea for the girl with light skin, with light blue, mint green and baby pink all suitable. By keeping your dress colour light, you are creating a nice balance that complements your complexion.

✓ Medium Coloured Skin – If you have slightly tanned skin, this would be classed as a medium tone, and earth colours will suit you best. Metallic colours are also an option, with gold, forest green, earth brown and mustard yellow that will suit your complexion.

✓ Pale Coloured Skin – Look for shades of red and pink, or possibly peachy tones, and avoid metallic colours, as they will wash away your skin tone. Avoid stark reds, pinks or black, as these colours are not suited for pale complexions.

✓ Take a Look at your Wardrobe – While there probably isn’t a dress that will kill it for the prom, take a good look at some of the outfits that do work for you, and look for a dress with a similar shade. You might have a sweater that really makes you look good, and with that colour in mind, search online boutiques for a gown in that shade.

Of course, asking a good friend is always a good idea before you make your final choice, and you can also wear various colours in front of the mirror to give you a good indication of the colours that work for you. When shopping for a prom dress, search online for a designer dress boutique, as they would have a great selection of designer gowns in all shades. Make sure you allow adequate time to have the gown altered by a seamstress, to guarantee a perfect fit.
